devoted to the study of temari and mathematics
It always bugs me me I go out searching for something on the web and I cannot find out about the source of the information so I can judge its validity. So with that in mind I have added a few comments about my credentials just in case you are interested. Please feel free to send me an email (temari@zymurlogic.net) if you have any comments or questions.
I have been creating temari for about 9 years now and doing other needlework for about 30 years. In temari I am largely self-taught from books and internet resources. This past spring (2006) I had the opportunity to work with a Japanese temari artist to submit my work to the Japanese Temari Association for certification at the first and second levels. I plan to continue to work on my skills for the third level although I will not be eligible to apply until 2008.
As far as mathematics goes, I hold a BS in Mathematics and Secondary Education. I taught some undergraduate math classes and middle school math for about 10 years before I stopped to work on my current main job...my family. I have always been intrigued by the mathematics that I see in the world around me so it is quite natural for me to explore the math that I see in temari. While much of the math I see in temari is outside of the topics that many students study in secondary school, or even college studies (outside of math degrees), it is not because it is particularly difficult or advanced. It is just not the typical algebra and geometry that school curricula are often focused on. I like to continue to study and explore mathematics and I love to see it in my temari. This website started as a way to gather and organize my thoughts. It gives me a chance to delve back into my college texts and renew professional contacts as I research and study. Presenting the information I find on this website lets me polish up some of my teaching and presenting skills and makes me be thorough in my work.
