Directions
- Wrap mari and mark a C8.
- To help you keep track of your stitching order, place markers pins of different colors at the N pole and two adjacent 8-way intersections on the obi.
- The stitches for the first stitching path will be taken on the straight lines at the N pole. (See Diagram 1) The thread will continue along the line to the 4-way intersection at the obi where it will crossover to the other side of the line and continue to the opposite 8-way intersection taking a stitch there. Continue on until you meet back at your starting place. (red path on diagram 1) You will need to repeat this path at the N pole so that there are stitches on all four of the straight lines. (blue path on diagram 1) Then repeat for the two marked 8-way intersections at the obi. You will be building up hexagons at the 6-way intersections and have crossovers at all 4-way intersections.
- The stitches for the second path are taken on the diagonal lines at the N pole. (See Diagram 2) The thread will crossover to the other side of the line at the 4-way intersection and continue on to the next 8-way intersection (on the obi in this case). Continue to crossover at the 4-way intersections and stitch at the 8-way intersections until you return to your start point. (green path on diagram 2) Repeat starting for each of the diagonal lines at the N pole. (orange, yellow and purple paths on diagram 2)
- Alternate stitching on path 1 and path 2 using the following color sequence:
| path 1 | path 2 |
|---|
| blue | blue |
| blue | blue |
| blue | blue |
| purple | orange |
| orange | |
Notes
The original was done with shades of color from light to dark. This is a good one for practicing your shitagake stitching technique. There are several variations I can thing of to explore:
- Don't alternate paths, stitch all rows on path 2 and then all on path 1 using a different color for each. Or reverse the order.
- Use a high contrast color for the first and last rows.
- Use a variegated thread for the main color.
- Alter the distance you start from the poles and don't necessarily keep it the same for path 1 and path 2.
- Space the stitches farther apart from row to row.
- Consider shading from dark to light rather than light to dark like in the book.
Now that I look at it, this one might be interesting to do for a pattern investigation.
