Directions
- Wrap a wide bias strip of fabric around the napkin ring folding under the start edge so that the inside finish will have no raw edges.
- Wrap three bands of manilla folder strips around the fabric.
- Wrap the long edges of the fabric back over the mainlla folder strips and sew together with a large zigzag stitch.
- Cover with a layer of thin batting and sewing interfacing, using a small bit of transparent tape or stitching to secure the interfacing.
- Use a pen or thin marker to divide the circumference into 16 sections.
- Follow the stitching path desired and stitch rounds until the ring is completely covered.
- Remove the napkin ring at any point after securing the interfacing. The inside of the finished ring will be the fabric.
Notes
The photo tutorial on the source website is fabulous. Follow the third link under the contents section of the main page. I made the base from bias strip of green fabric, 3 wraps of manilla folder strip, batting, interfacing. Used napkin ring for form. Used regular temari (herringbone) stitch rather than special thimble stitch. It really was not that difficult to create and it was fun to watch the design develop. Several of the Japanese temari books have patterns in them and would be fun to explore at some point. This one was made to be a stand for the watermelon temari (#050802 for the summer desert GITS.
