Directions

See sources for basic instructions. The wrap technique on this is different to create the spindle look around the obi. Wrap the first three bands in the usual way. Bands are one row gold, then 4 rows color. Be sure to alternate direction with each row rather than wrapping all of one direction, then all in the other so that you build up a nice size pile at the crossover point. See pic 1 in diagram section. For the following bands the thread path will go around the pile rather than across it. See pic 2 in diagram section. Finish with one spindle row in gold around the spindle shapes created at the obi to help hold the wraps in place.

Notes

This a really neat variation of the usual wrapping techinique. It was discovered accidentally be Tamara on TT. She was following Anna Diamond's directions expilcitly and they said to go 'around the pin'. The result is the spindle shape at the obi but it doesn't necessarily hold up unless you have something in place to help guide the threads...when you remove the pin it collapses. So I decided to try it after building up a bundle in the usual way. Then the curve of the ball and the friction of the thread hold everything in place so that you don't even need an obi. I would like to try another variation where I do go 'around the pin' from the beginning and then wrap the thread in two separate bundles at the crossover point.
