Thick black lines are marking lines, thin black lines are wraps, colored lines are stitches to create stars in the hexagon area

Directions

  1. Mark an S6 with orange. Tack the poles and mark the obi placement but do not wrap the obi.
  2. Wrap 2 lines about 1cm on either side of each marking line starting the thread at the obi and crossing at the obi.
  3. Wrap two more lines about 1cm from the previous ones for each direction.
  4. Continue alternating in the three directions, with 1 row purple, 1 row orange then 2 rows purple all placed right next to each other.
  5. Fill in the six pointed star pattern by working pine needle stitches over each intersection in the main hexagon area at the poles. See diagram above.
  6. Decorate the negative space at the obi as desired. I used three long stitches that crossed at the obi in an X, with the top sections crossing each other to create a cross hatched area.

Notes

Once again I am delighted with this orange thread I got from Elsie. The color is fabulous on purple. It stitched quite nicely and really doesn't need any shine since the color is so strong. I think the original design in the book was done on a bigger ball with about the same spacing between the lines as I used. They had more room in the obi area and the hexagon seemed to take up less of the surface than mine does. I've always loved this pattern, I may have to try it again in other strong color pairs or perhaps with a more interesting thread wrap.
