Directions

  1. Mark C8 in gold.
  2. Stitch open triangle on alternate octahedral triangles. Start point is 1/16th of circumference from 8-way intersection. (See diagram) For this ball it was about 1.5 cm. Use the darker colors.
  3. Stitch tri wings with the arms interlocked with the triangles and the centers interwoven. The outer start points are just outside the outer edge of the triangles, the inner start points are right close to the 6-way intersection.
  4. Stitch pine needle stitches in the negative space, extending the stitches across the 6-way intersection when you can. Pay attention to the intersection so that is doesn't get messy with the partial stitches.

Notes

This is the first temari I've stitched with Bunka. I was delighted to find that the color changes slightly when it is unchained since I wasn't thrilled with the Bunka colors in general. Unchained they seem to be brighter and less greyed. The texture is wonderful both to look and feel. I thought it might be difficult to weave with since it is pretty fine when unchained but actually I think it was easier than perle cotton. As far as the design goes, I like the combination of the triwings with the triangles. I think there is potential for play here in color choices (stripes?!), interwoven vs. inerlocked, and direction if interwoven (inner to outer vs. outer to inner). I don't recall seeing other designs using this structure.
