line drawing showing the placement of the support lines splitting the 6-way intersections
Support lines show as dotted lines. Shaded grey area will be filled with rose garden.

Directions

  1. Mark a C8 and add support lines splitting the 6-way intersections. Do not make the support lines too long or you will need to remove them at the end. Alternately use an inconspicuous thread for the support lines.
  2. Start the rose garden with a hexagon on the 6 support lines following the table for colors. (red on diagram for first hexagon, blue on diagram for the second)
Hexagon on support threads Hexagon on regular division threads
3 rows yellow 2 rows yellow
2 rows dark pink 2 rows dark pink
1 row of dark, medium and light pink 1 row of dark medium and light pink
1 row of dark, medium, light pink and white 1 row of dark, medium and light pink, 4 rows white, 3 rows green, 1 row green metallic
  3. Stitch the last round of the rose garden over the previous round slipping the needle between the rows to take the stitches on the support lines. The first stitch is taken just after the first white thread in the previous row. There are 2 rows light pink and 3 rows white.
  4. Fill in the negative space with green metallic. Start at the top of one of the hexagons (not on a support line), cross over at the point where 2 hexagaons meet and take the next stitch at the bottom of the adjacent hexagon continuing back to the starting place. (green on diagram) Move to the next hexagaon to the right and repeat until all 4 hexagons at the N pole are done. That will complete all of the paths. Repeat the paths taking the stitches closer to the poles.

Notes

Trying out a new method of coloring rose gardens where each round is shaded from dark to light. I think it gives much more of a flower look that with each round being a solid color. I would like to play with reversing the shading. Also, I played with the negative space using a sort of zig zag stitching. I think the result might be nice to explore further either with smaller rose gardens (think peacock feathers) or as more of a string art sort of design.
