Directions

  1. Wrap mari and mark a simple 8 using the lightest of your colors. Pin mark the obi placement.
  2. Add support lines 2cm above and below the obi line. These may be removed later if you wish. (They were removed on the sample.)
  3. Starting with white, wrap additional vertical lines around the mark crossing over at the N and S poles.
  4. Continue to wrap vertical lines moving from white to lt pink, med pink, dk pink, lt green and one wrap of dark green. Use enough wraps of each color so that the lines are less than 2mm apart at the obi.
  5. Start stitching the thimble ring area on the first white line, working your way around the ball in a zig zag path. Keeping the N pole up do the alternate zig zag path also on the first white line. (See red and blue paths on diagram.)
  6. Continue to stitch the zig zags around the ball using whatever color is next in sequence, finishing with the dark green round.

Notes

I like the way the vertical wraps interact with the thimble ring giving the illusion of it being done with all one thread path instead of layers. I also like the effect of the thimble ring stitches being spaced out rather than right close together the way you usually see them. This is the first time I have been able to figure out the special stitch technique for the thimble ring stitching that gives the little vertical stitch at the top. I think I will do a complete pattern investigation on this particular thimble ring pattern since I see many possibilities in the design and I think the stitch technique could use more explanation. Another thought as I prep the pictures...I think I could redo this design and alter the colors slightly to get a strong floral effect at the poles. Increase the width of the thimble ring so it climbs closer to the poles, use a single dark color where the green is, use a shading of colors where the pinks are but have it so it is dark in the middle and shades to light on both sides.
