Directions

  1. Wrap a mari in light blue thread followed by a very sparse gold overwrap. Mark an S8. Leave the pins to mark the obi placement but don't put an obi line.
  2. Measure 2cm up and down from the obi pins. Stitch a marking line securely above and below the obi line.
  3. Starting with dark brown, stitch the zig zags for the thimble ring. Alternate on the blue and red paths shown on the diagram.
  4. Repeat step 3 with the lt brown and then the gold.
  5. Continue to stitch on the thimble ring using the same order of colors until it is completely filled in. If you do not have room for a complete color pattern then just do the dark brown to fill in.
  6. For the poles, follow the green stitching path on the diagram to stitch an 8 point star with the inner points in between the marking threads and the outer points at the halfway mark between the pole and thimble ring edge. Use dk brown, then lt brown, then gold with the 2nd and 3rd rows being shitagake kagari.

Notes

My second thimble ring temari. It is somewhat more challenging to have th stitching placed closely together (as opposed to spaced apart like on #060901). Your division needs to be quite even or you will have gaps just as you would with any all over design but filing them in would be pretty obvious on this design. It is not easy to keep the lines of the thimble ring smooth and even. I'll need to work on my stitching tension or come up with a better way of anchoring the support lines to mark the edge. Also, I like the negative space forming when the design is partially done. There is potential there to do something interesting but I am not sure what yet.
