Directions

  1. Mark and S12. Pin mark the location of the obi but do not place a marking line.
  2. Measure up and down 2cm from the obi pins on each marking line. Place a support line around the ball using these measurements. Be sure the line is secure.
  3. Start with the red thread and the red stitching path in the diagram. Stitch three rows using the thimble ring stitch.
  4. Using the yellow thread stitch in the blue path in the diagram for three rows.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 as many times as necessary to completely fill the space.
  6. Embellish the pole space as desired.

Notes

This is a variation of a basic thimble ring pattern. This time I think I finally got the stitch technique correct using the diagrams from a Japanese thimble ring website. The colors were inspired by a modern art piece I saw at the Milwaukee Art Museum. I didn't write down the name but it consisted of three rectangular canvases hung side by side painted in primary red, blue and yellow. The simplicity of the piece and the purity of the colors was inspiring and I remembered it when I was choosing colors for this design. Although I am pleased to finally have gotten the stitch executed correctly, I am not pleased with the final result since my technique was not consistent throughout and the edges of the thimble ring are rather rough. I decided not to finish the negative space since I'll most likely wrap over this one at some point. I might have to try again with the colors though.
