diagram for design on poles

diagram for thimble ring
Directions
- Wrap a mari in black. Mark a S16 in gold. Place pins for the obi but do not mark.
- Measure up and down 1cm from the obi pins to place support lines for the thimble ring. Alternately, stitch the pole designs first and place the support lines at the base of the points.
- For the poles (first diagram above):
- Stitch interwoven and interlocked spindles on every other division line. For each spindle the stitches will be at about halfway between the pole and the top edge of the thimble ring. Each spindle stitch will go over the threads of the one directly next to it and under all of the others. (This is somewhat like #050704.) I will do a more detailed description on the next notebook entry. Alternately just do a regular interwoven spindle design on 8 marking lines. I did three rows of burgundy, one row of gold and then three rows of burgundy.
- Stitch a single kiku on the lines not used by the spindles with one row blue, five rows tan and one row blue. The inner points are as close to the spindle intersections as you can go. The outer points are about even with the gold row on the spindles.
- Stitch another kiku alternating with the previous one and weaving in and out around it. Do not include the spindle threads in the weaving. Do one row tan, five rows blue and one row tan.
- For the thimble ring (second diagram above):
- Use burgundy thread to establish the zig zag path, stitching one row on both the red and blue zig zag in the diagram.
- Continue to stitch on the paths alternating one and the other with burgundy until you are halfway across the section. I did 6 rows.
- Stitch one row of tan on one zig zag and one row of blue on the other.
- Reverse the colors, stitching blue on the zig zag you started with tan and vice versa. Comtinue in these colors until there is only room for one more row. I did five rows.
- Reverse the colors onece again for the last rows on the thimble ring.
Notes
I had planned on this one being a thimble ring sampler with three separate rings, but the curvature of the ball impeded my plans more than I expected so I bailed on that idea and just embellished the poles. Normally for a design like this you would want to do the pole designs first and then add the thimble ring so that you have more control over the points of the design being where you want them to be. I would have liked for them to be closer to the obi but I was too lazy to take it out and start over after I got a bunch done. As far as the spindle design goes, I have been thinking for some time that the star design I did on six lines (#050704, #050804, and #060406) could be adapted to any number of lines. This was a one color test of that. I will do it in multiple colors on the next ball and explain the process in more detail assuming it all works out.
