structure of weaving at the poles, notice grey area goes over the half of the spindle next to it but under all of the others
Directions
- Wrap a mari in white. Place pins to mark the N and S poles and the 16 equally spaced points around the obi but do not place marking threads.
- Choose an order for the colors on both poles. You will use the same sequence of colors in each round.
- Stitch the spindles over the N pole. The stitches go just below the obi pins. At the spindle intersection you will be weaving the spindles. The thread will go over the near side of the spindle right next to it, then under all of the others, then over the last side of the spindle next to it on the far side of the pole. (See detail diagram above or see pattern investigation Stars Part 1.) After the first row it will look like the first spindle you stitched is out of place since it is mostly on top of all the others but it is not. It will be fine when the design is done.
- Stitch the spindles over the S pole. The stitch points are just on the N pole side of the pins in between the threads of the N pole spindles. The N pole and S pole spindles will interweave creating the diamond shapes at the obi. Weave the S pole spindles as you did on the N pole.
- Continue to alternate spindles on the N and S pole keeping to the established weaving pattern and the established color order. You may need a longer needle to do the weaving. Add rows until the points of the star are almost at the same level as the points of the spindle stitches.
- Stitch one row of metallic on the N pole and S pole spindles keeping the stitching order the same as previous rows.
- Add pine needle stitches across the stars at the pole from inner point to inner point.
- If needed, groom the threads near the stars so that there is no gap in the middle of the spindles.
Notes
I have been thinking for some time that the star design I did on six lines (#050704, #050804, and #060406) could be adapted to any number of lines. I tried it out on 8 lines on the last design but only with one color so this one was a full test using multiple colors. I do not think you would want to do this on much more than 16 divisions. It is more challenging to do the weaving for the star and the sections get so narrow that the colors can look pretty muddy. It might be nice to try this one with just two shades of a color. I think it would really accentuate the floral look. I tried this one with the marking lines in place and found that they made it much more difficult to weave so I ended up ripping it all out and starting all over. Leaving the marking lines off makes it easier but then you need to stitch the spindles without marking lines. That is not too bad since they go in between each other, but it is probably not something a beginner would like to do. This particular one took about 6 yards of each color and about 3 yards of metallic.
