The original temari that inspired this one. It is an old play temari so it is a little beat up.

Basic placement for spindles
Directions
- Wrap a mari in yellow. Mark a C8 with gold thread.
- Work crossed spindles on all twelve of the 4-way intersections using the yellow threads. The starting point for the spindles is the halfway point on the short lines and the same distance from the center for the long lines. Use dark yellow on the spindles pointing toward the 8-way intersections and light yellow on the spindles pointing toward the 6-way intersections. I did 6 rows, then reversed the colors for 2 rows.
- Use gold to stitch a square around the outside of the spindle intersection. This will help to hold the spindle threads in place.
- Use shades of blue (one for each spindle) to stitch crossed spindles at each of the 6-way intersections. The starting points for the spindles are the same distance from the 6-way center as the for the yellow spindles. Use weaving to establish the star pattern at the intersection. (See pattern investigation Stars Part 1.) Stitch until the points almost meet the squares from step 3 (about 7 rows) then add one row of gold on all three spindles.
- Use shades of purple to stitch crossed spindles at the 8-way intersections. Use dark purple for the spindles going toward the yellow intersections and light purple for the spindles going toward the blue intersections. The starting points for the spindles are half of the distance on the shorter lines (towards yellow spindles). Use the same distance for all four spindles. Weave at the intersection of the spindles to create the star pattern. Stitch 7 rows, then reverse the colors and stitch 2 rows, then finish with one row of gold.
Notes
Here is another woven star design on the intersections of a C8 using mini spindles instead of wrapping. I was trying to do a new version of a mini spindle design I did a long time ago when I was first learning temari and did not know better than to try these tiny spindles. What a pain. I have no idea how I managed the original. Weaving to create the star shapes really helps to keep the spindles in place and makes it possible to have stable thread placement when you are done. The 8-way intersection star gave me the idea for the St. Patrick's Day temari #070302.
