Division/Marking
Simple 12
Directions
- Wrap a mari in lavender. Place pins for a simple 12 marking alternating two colors around the obi.
- The gold underwrap is worked on two sets of pins at right angles to each other. Start at one pin and wrap rows about 3mm apart, crossing at the obi pins. The high point of the wrap is at 2.9 cm.
- Skip two pins and wrap another gold layer using the third pin as a starting place.
- As an alternative to the gold underwrap, either do a random gold wrap on the mari to begin with, use an interesting variegated mari wrap thread, or just skip it entirely.
- Wrap an obi with peach about 1 cm wide.
- To wrap the pattern threads you will be using two different sets of alternating pins, set A and Set B.
- Start with the A set wrapping a band of medium green. The starting point of the band is about 2.9 cm from the poles (where the gold under wrap stopped) and it crosses at opposite pins on the obi. Wrap a band about .5 cm wide moving towards the poles.
- Still on the A set of pins, wrap a white band with the top point about .5 cm from the poles and wrapping outward for about 1cm.
- On the B set of pins, wrap with purple. The top point of the band is about .5 cm from the pole Wrap outward for about 1.6 cm.
- Wrap lt green on the A pins starting next to the med green moving inward for a little less than .5 cm. There will be a gap left between the lt green and the white from step 8.
- Go back to the B pins and wrap another purple band starting next to the previous purple band and wrapping outward until the edge is about 2.9 cm from the pole.
- On the A pins, wrap a band of white in between the lt green from step 10 and the white from step 8.
- Wrap three lines of gold (very thin) in the center of the purple wraps, right over the pole.
- Wrap three lines of peach in the center of the inner white wraps right over the poles.
Notes
I need to work on a better way to write the directions for these. My working notes end up being a fairly simple scribbled diagram. I might see if I can formalize that next time rather than trying to write all the sequence verbally. I think it is too confusing that way. This temari was made for the temari swap for Stitch In NY 2007. I had started a stitched design but found that I could not do it without my new glasses that were having the prescription adjusted, so I switched to a wrapped design instead. I really like this style of design and have wanted to play with it some more for some time. I did one awhile ago but was not thrilled with it. I like this one much better. The sewing thread is not as hard to work with as you might think. It stays in place nicely and has a beautiful shine with a satin look like a ribbon when it is all done. I would love to use silk but I the only silk thread I could find locally was 100wt which I thought was too tiny. I think I will order some single strand silk floss from Vikki Clayton to try for this. In the future I will make the wrapped design area smaller. The outer width of 2.9 cm was too much for this size mari I think. The interplay of colors in the bands around the obi areas will be more interesting if there is more space there. And their interaction will enhance the design at the poles better if they are not so far down on the ball. It is important to make sure to keep the evolving space around the poles a regular shape at each step. It cannot be easily adjusted later and the irregularity can have quite an impact on the finished design.
