Directions

  1. Wrap mari and mark a C10 with gold.
  2. Stitch a small hexagon at each 6-way intersection. I used 4 rounds of orange and three rounds of purple.
  3. See the first diagram and stitch one round with orange along the red thread path. Keep these stitches loose as they will get pulled tighter in the next step. Stitches will cross at the 4-way intersections.
  4. Stitch a second row with orange using the blue thread path on the second diagram. These stitches are taken around the threads from the previous step and cinch the threads together.
  5. Stitch as many more rows as you like using the uwagake stitch arrangement. I did one more.
  6. Embellish the negative space as desired. Since I used a fancy thread wrap I left it blank.

Notes

Once again I used the Signatures thread for a wrap even though it is a bit fussy. It really gives a beautiful wrap. I wanted to do something with negative space to show off the wrap so I went digging into the books. The ball that inspired this one is a little different, using a regular kiku style stitching that was interwoven at the outer points. I decided to try the crossover so that the petals of the negative space would have sharper points. I really agonized about leaving the marking threads in or removing them. For now I left them but I might still go take them out later.
