Diagrams

Diagram 1: wrapped bands (purple) and first layer of triangles (red)

Diagram 2: second layer of squares (blue) and triangles (green)

Directions

  1. Wrap mari and mark a C8.
  2. Wrap bands of purple on both sides of each marking line. I used 5 wraps on each side.
  3. Add starburst stitches over the 8 way and 6 way intersections with pink Treasure Braid.
  4. For the rest of the design use two strands of thread in the needle. Use the med green to stitch one row on the triangles pictured in diagram 1. The stitches go just past the width of the wrapped bands.
  5. Repeat with light green and then again with med green. Be sure to keep the stitching order consistent so that the layering works out correctly.
  6. Use med green and stitch one row on each of the squares shown in diagram 2.
  7. Use med green to stitch one row on each of the triangles on diagram 2.
  8. Repeat the last two steps with light green and then with med green.

Notes

This little temari ball has been reincarnated several times. The core is a little one that I did when I was first doing temari. I am cleaning out my baskets and decided to wrap over it. Then, the mari was wrapped and marked with a C6 to try out a design in Azuma Temari. But I was not happy with how that was coming out so I ripped it out. I liked the colors though. I had found another little one in my basket from long ago that I thought had potential for a design so I used it to plan this one. Now that it is done I think it will stay like this for while. With the subtle colors it is one that looks better up close than across the room.

Now that it is finished I see more exploring that I can do with the design. First of all I can do something more interesting with the wrapped bands. I had planned to do that but kept it simple while I worked out the rest of the design. I think they would be pretty using the star technique like on this one . Second, I think I could play with some interlocking of the other layers. Or third (and this is my favorite possibility) I could work the triangle and square layers with the stitches around the bands like on this one at the bottom of the kiku stitches . It would mean working the shapes from the outside in because of the way the stitches lay. I think that between the first idea and this one it would end up giving the whole desing more of a flowers in the leaves look. Who knows? I may try it out soon.
