Diagram 2: detail of individual diamond

Directions

  1. Mark a C10 and then 32 centers with thin metallic.
  2. Use pale blue to stitch a continuous zig zag path around the ball. Place stitches 3 mm from the pentagon centers on the long lines of the big pentagon. The thread paths cross at the big diamond centers. Repeat until all pentagons are complete. (blue lines on diagram 1)
  3. Repeat step 2 four more times. Space stitches evenly along the long line of the big pentagon. You will have starbursts in the big diamonds when you are done. (red lines on diagram 1)
  4. Use pale green to stitch a single row just inside the big diamond. Stitches are close to the big 6-part triangle centers and 3 mm away from the pentagon centers. Weave the thread under the stitch of the starbursts near the pentagon centers. (Diagram 2)
  5. Use 6 ply of navy floss, stranded and laid flat, to make straight stitches along the outer sides of the green diamonds covering the pale blue stitches. The stitches near the pentagon centers are not covered. (Diagram 2)
  6. Use navy floss to stitch one row just beneath first blue starburst row (shitagake stitching) sliding the thread under the bundle of threads at the center of the starbursts. (Diagram 2)
  7. Thread one needle with both pale green and #5 sized silver metallic. Stitch small starbursts over the large ones. The stitches go in between the pale blue lines. Skip the vertical stitch into the star points from step 4. These starbursts will fill the small diamond you see in the middle of the large one. (Diagram 2)

Notes

This is a redo of one that I did at the AZ Stitch In last year for the string game. I made a few alterations in the design.
