Directions
- Wrap mari and mark a Combination 8 with inconspicuous thread.
- Use the special zig zag technique alternating the throw of the stitch by row (see the kagari pattern investigation) to stitch an octagon to fill each of the 6 squares. Opposite octagons have the same color. There will be 2 yellow, 2 orange, and 2 green.
- Use 6 strands of the dark green embroidery floss stranded and laid flat to stitch pine needle stitches diagonally across the squares. Start at one corner and stitch back and forth until you have filled in to the halfway point on the side of the square. You will completely cover two opposite sections of the octagon
- Repeat step 3 until all squares have an octagon stitched in them.
- Use perle cotton in the color of the octagon to stitch a small X over the bundle of threads in the center of each octagon.
- Use perle cotton to stitch triwings at the corners of the squares. Inner stitches are next to the triangle center, outer stitches are at the halfway mark on the short lines of the triangles. The inner points are interlocked. Stitch 1 row yellow, 1 row green, and 1 row orange.
- Finish the triwings with 1 row of green metallic stitched in a continuous path crossing at the points of the triwings. (red line on diagram)
Notes
This is a remake of one that I did with Elsie's safety orange thread a long time ago #060506. I wanted to revisit the pinwheel idea and see if I could make them more distinct. I love the colors but I can take no credit for picking them; they were from one of the DMC three packs I bought on clearence awhile ago. Someone at DMC had the honor of putting them together.
