Directions
- Mark a Simple 12 with equator with thin gold metallic.
- Use the lightest color green to stitch one row of reverse kiku herringbone (uwagake on the bottom) with top points 1/4 the distance from the North pole to the equator, and the bottom points 3/8 the distance from the equator to the South pole.
- Repeat step 2 for the South pole.
- Continue to add rows to the green switching to progressively darker green colors until the lines meet in the equator section. (see detail picture).
- Add one row of the Nordic Gold thread on the green sections.
- Use two strands of thread in the needle for the flower. Stitch two rows of kiku herringbone with the yellow thread, then three rows of the yellow-orange.
- For the next row of yellow-orange take the kiku stitch in between the existing rows of yellow and yellow-orange threads.
- Repeat the last step with one row of orange. The points should meet at the equator.
- Use a single strand of purple to add two lazy daisy stitches at the top of each green kiku section around the equator and to add pine needle stitches in the space around the flower points. (see detail photo)
Notes
I was experimenting with upside down uwagake for this one. I really like the structure at the equator; it looks very plantlike to me. It might be fun to do another with lots more divisions, pehaps extending that part higher on the ball. I also like the subtle coloring of the green on the turquoise at the center of the flower.
