Directions

  1. Wrap and mark a C6 with gold. Add support lines to split 4 centers into 18 sections.
  2. Stitch a spindle top kiku on one set of lines in each center. Inner stitches at 1/4 of distance on short line of triangle, outer stitches at 3/4.
  3. Stitch 2 rows of navy kiku herringbone on alternate lines. Use same spacing for stitches as in step 2.
  4. Stitch triwing and hexagon on alternate 6-way intersections. Stitch triwings with a continuous thread path. Three rows navy for hexagon. 1 row white, three rows navy, 1 row white for tri wing. (red line on diagram, only one path shown, will need 3 paths to complete all triwings)
  5. Stitch triangles on top of triwings, use uwagake style stitching over the triangle points. Start near the tip of the triwings and take the following rows toward the center. See picture for placement. 1 row white, three rows navy, 1 row white.

Notes

This was the first attempt at this design. I really love the indigo and white colors. I am not thrilled with how the centers of the flowers came out. I know I am missing something on the technique for these spindle top kikus. I have to say that I really do love the tetrahedral symmetry of a C6 design. I think the triwings are a bit heavy. I like the braided effect with the triangles over them but they don't seem to give quite the right balance in the design yet.
