Directions
- Wrap mari and mark a C8 with white perle cotton.
- Stitch a square with red metallic. Sttiches are 2/3 way on the long lines of the 8 part square.
- Stitch one row of red metallic on the triangles. Stitches are just inside the corners of the squares from step 2.
- Continue to alternate stitching on the squares and triangles ending with squares. Alternate red and yellow floss, starting with yellow on the squares and red on the triangles. For the squares, use the floss directly as it comes off the skein, maintaining the twist. For the triangles, strip all 6 strands and recombine to lay them flat for the stitches. Total of 6 rows on the squares and 5 rows on the triangles.
- Stitch one row of purple around each of the kite shapes formed at the triangle/square intersections. Lay the floss flat around the triangles sections and retwist for the square sections of the kite shape.
- Stitch one row of red metallic around each kite shape.
- Embellish negative space as desired.
Notes
Like the previous design, this one was designed to showcase the techniques of floss. I started farther from the center to give room for more rows so that I could highlight the effect that the different sizes creates. It has an op art feel to me. I struggled with the negative space for this one. It needed something but everything seemed to overwhelm the design. I ended up with simple purple asterisks and x's using only two strands of floss.
