Directions
- Wrap mari and mark a C8 with dark red metallic.
- Stitch three interwoven (kousa or layered one row at a time) open spindles across one of the 6-part triangles. The start points are just outside the edge of the triangle on a short line and the spindle stretches across the triangle to an equal distance outside the opposite point of the triangle. (see diagram) Note: these will create an irregular hexagon where they intersect.
- Stitch alternating rows on the three open spindles as follows:
- 1 row dark red with two strands in the needle
- 1 row grey, single strand
- 1 row pink, single strand
- 1 row grey, single strand
- Repeat in established pattern until the points are at the next 6-way intersection. End with a grey row.
- Repeat for the triangle at the opposite side of the ball.
- Use two strands of green in the needle and wrap one wrap around the outside of the spindles, crossing over the point where their points meet.
- Stitch solid squares at the 4-way intersections in between the spindle points. There will be six of them that are not covered by the spindle stitching. 1 row grey, 1 row pink, 1 row grey, 1 row green, 1 row grey, 1 row pink, 1 row grey.
- Stitch diamonds around the squares with the points at the crossover for the spindles and at the squares points. These will meet the stitching of the last row of green on the spindles. 1 row dark red, 1 row green (two strands in needle), 1 row dark red. See second picture above.
- Add green straight stitches in the remaining negative space if desired.
Notes
This design came out of playing with some shapes for a design that Kathy was creating. (It was nothing like this one.) I was experimenting with a simpler stitching path for something she was doing and came up with these crossed spindles on a C8. My idea didn't work for her design - her original path was better for what she wanted to create - but, I liked the possibility so this is the result of my play. I think there is more potential to this, possibly including some interlocking rather than layering. We'll see if I get time to pursue it some more later.
