Materials

Wrap
dark green cone thread
Marking
Rainbow Gallery Gold Rush 18, gold color
Design threads
#5 perle cotton scraps

Directions

  1. Wrap mari and mark a C10 with gold.
  2. Sort the perle cotton scraps into light, medium and dark values.
  3. Stitch a five point star inside each pentagon. The first row is gold, then alternate rows between dark and light perle cotton colors. Be sure to choose the colors randomly and don't use the same color twice on the same star. Finish with a row of gold. I used many different variations for stitching the stars.
  4. Use medium colored perle cotton to embellish the negative space.

Notes

This is my first orts ball! Even the core is made of orts! I keep little snippets of extra thread that are too small for anything in an ort jar next to my stitching area. Then I keep bigger leftovers (big enough for a few stitches but less than two yards) in an orts baggie in my thread drawer. This temari had a core using orts from the ort jar and the design stitched from the bigger orts.

I think orts are pretty wonderful. I am planning a blog post on them in the very near future.
