Directions
- Wrap mari and mark a C6 with black metallic.
- Locate 4 centers and add support lines splitting each triangle into 36 sections. (Support lines not shown on diagram)
- Stitch one set of triangles around your 4 centers with red velvet thread. Stitches are halfway on the long lines of the triangle. (red on diagram)
- Stitch the other set of triangles with red velvet thread. Stitches are just inside the triangles from the last step.(blue on diagram)
- Continue stitching, alternating between the two sets of triangles. Use the #8 perle doubled in the needle, use the other threads as singles. 3 rows #8 grey, 1 row red #5 perle, 3 rows #8 grey, 1 row red velvet.
- Stitch large triangles outside the first set of 4 center triangles. Stitches will be taken at the center of the other triangle set. Stitch 3 rows #8 grey and one row #5 red. Interlock these large triangles with the previous triangle sides.(green on diagram)
Notes
This was stitched as part of an exploration of converting designs between divisions on the Temari Challenge Yahoo group. I love the way this design translated to the C6. The tetrahedral symmetry really shines here. The negative space has some really funky three way shapes both in the main set of centers and in the centers with the hexagons. I like the way the variegated grey thread stitched up. I was really just tryiing to use it up from my stash but was plesantly surprised. It gives a kindof tarnished silver sort of look. White would have been too stark.
I was also playing with texture on this one by using the wooly nylon wrap, the different sizes of perle and the velvet thread. I think it was a successful experiment.
