Directions
- Wrap mari and mark a C10. Add lines for a 32 center marking.
- Five point stars are stitched with sakasa uwagake kagari. That is, work all points using the kiku herringbone stitch. Starting points are halfway on a short side of the original C10 diamond. See diagram for placement.
- Always use two strands of Wildflowers in the needle. Alternate one row natural with one row of green tea until four rows are done, then switch to a single strand of Wildflowers, Green tea and complete the star.
- Stitch triwings in the spaces between stars. Inner points are close to the hexagon centers, outer points are 2/3 from the center on the long lines of the hexagon. See diagram for placement.
- Remove marking lines if necessary.
- Use one strand of Natural Watercolors to outline each of the stars. To make the stitching easier you can stitch these like a regular five pointed star but stitch under each of the arms so that you only outline the points.
Notes
The inspiration for this design was the structure of the rhinovirus (the virus that causes the common cold). Although I did not really manage to capture the structure of the virus accurately I am still quite pleased with the result and it spawned quite a few other ideas for me to try out. I love the spinning look and movements of the elements on this one. Some rhinovirus links: Viperdb, Virus Capsid Images, a rhino virus image from virology.wic.edu.
