Directions

  1. Wrap mari and mark a S16 with equator with metallic.
  2. Stitch one row of uwagake chidori kagari (kiku herringbone) with yellow. Upper points are at 1/4 from the pole to equator, taken in between marking lines. Lower points are at 3/16 from equator to pole skipping two guidelines from the inner point. The placement of the stitches will require several passes around the ball to return to the starting point. Do one row on the N and one row on the S. (See yellow lines with numbers on diagram.)
  3. Repeat step 2 with 1 row yellow, 2 rows blue, two rows white and 1 row yellow. Adjust the curve of the lines as you go to allow room for the uwagake stitches and to space out the intersections.
  4. Wrap the equator with 1 row white, 3 rows blue and 1 row white.
  5. Embellish poles as desired. I did an 8 point star with white, inner points close to center, outer points one row away from the main design element. Then one row yellow with inner stitches taken about 1cm below the white stitches cinching them in tight and outer stitches next to the main design element. I added a lare french knot with blue to the center.

Notes

This design is the cumulation of my study on increasing the number of intersections on a kiku. I am totally thrilled with how it came out. I didn't really expect the colors to do so well on the purple but it turned out to be a great complement for them. I wrote a blog entry about pulling this one together. You'll find it tagged under kiku.
