JTA Certification Entries

These are links to the notebook pages for the temari I submitted to the Japanese Temari Association for level 1 and level 2 certification. I've included a few comments about the process as well. Click on the thumbnail to go to the notebook page with enlarged views and details about the temari. Note that the next and previous buttons on the individual notebook pages refer to the notebook in general and not to the JTA submissions shown here.

closeup view of temari 060103I originally submitted this one for level 1 but there are errors in the execution. If you look closely at the large picture you can see where the stitches do not line up correctly which causes gaps on some of the peaks. This is because I varied my starting place and did not compensate by weaving under the starting stitch. It is the same error you get if you do not keep the N pole up when stitching a N/S pattern, so I needed to redo the ball.

Comments about level 2

The diagrams for these temari were all done by hand and then scanned into the computer. I used a base C8 or C10 diagram and then pencil, colored pencil and even crayon on one of them. Since then, I found a computer program to do diagrams, but in some cases it is still much easier to do them by hand. The written directions I submitted are the same as the directions on the notebook pages for the level 2 temari.

Originally I had hoped to use some of the temari in my collection for my JTA submissions, but I found that I tend to use many non-traditional fibers and I didn't think that would work well for JTA certification. I also found that the size of the temari in my collection varied by quite a bit. I ended up creating new temari so that the size was between 25 and 26 cm and the fibers used were more traditional.
