devoted to the study of temari and mathematics
Check this page for site updates. I try to update at least once a month with a minimum of the current notebook entries. Investigations and math studies take awhile to complete so they will be less frequent. There is also an RSS feed for temarimath. RSS is an automated way to check on headlines via an RSS agregator or reader. Some browsers (Safari for Mac, IE 7, Opera) have built in readers, otherwise you have to use a program or a specific webpage like MyYahoo. If you would like more information about RSS try the Yahoo RSS information page. It is focused on the MyYahoo homepage service they offer but it gives good solid information about what RSS is and more or less how it works. If you like the RSS idea but want a different program to read it then do an online search for RSS reader.
There are five new temari in my notebook today. Three of them are ones that I made in 2007 for my friend Barb who was writing an article for Creative Needle Magazine. Two of the three were published with her article in the March/April Issue. You can find all three on the 2007 index page or by following these individual links: #070802, #070803 and #070804. The other two new ones are a result of playing around with 'the string game' that Barb shared with us at the SW Stitch In. Since they are the two most recent, you can access them from the main notebook index or from the 2008 index page.
I just added five new temari to the notebook. They include some that I worked on for activities at the February SW Stitch In as well as a special experiment with some fibers that Kathy shared at the Stitch In. You can access them from the main notebook index or from the 2008 index page.
I am adding a whole new section to the site called Fun and Games. You can access it on the navigation list to the right of the page or from the site map page. The Fun and Games page will link to temari based activities that can be used just for fun. Currently you'll find instructions and a card generator for Temari Bingo, directions for a small 'getting to know you' game, instructions for the Color Challenge Melee (you gotta try this one!) and a very silly bonus game. Enjoy!
In the 'better late than never' category I have finally posted the Hexagon Study also know as When is a Hexagon Not a Hexagon? It is one that I started a long time ago about regular hexagons and other shapes on the sphere but never quite got around to finishing. You can get to it directly using the links above, from the math studies main page (menu at right) or the site map page (link above).
Well I finally finished the temari that I started in late November, #080101. It is based on a C8 multipole marking. And since it is a brand new year, the new design goes on the new 2008 index page in the notebook.
Ooops. I uploaded two new designs to the notebook a bit ago and forgot to update this page. The new designs are #071101 and #071102. They are both structured on a 16 faces marking, a special marking that starts from a C6 or C8 and adds supports lines to create pentagons and hexagons. Also, my digital camera died so I won't be posting anything new until after the holiday season. Happy Stitching!
I've added a pattern investigation for Multiple of Three Colored Designs. It includes detailed pictures for using the multiple of three technique for marking multipoles and replaces the detail page that I did earlier when I did the multipole math study. Since I needed to do a new ball to get the detail pictures there is a new entry in the notebook, #071003. I also did a little housekeeping and worked on the print format for the webpages. It should be a little more streamlined now. Note: I did not test the print formatting in all browsers so please let me know if you experience difficulty with it. (temari@zymurlogic.net)
Once again there are two new entries in the notebook. #071001 is an interpretation of a spiral pattern out of a Japanese book. Although not a particularly difficult pattern in concept it was a bit of a pain in execution. #071002 is a study of braided kiku ideas. It includes two versions using vibrant colors in narrow stripes.
There are two new entries in the notebook #070901 and #070902. They are both done with a similar techniques but on different multi markings. #070902 also uses one of my favorite fuzzy fibers. I've been distracted by the beginning of the school year so I do not seem to be getting too much temari done right now. Hopefully that will settle out shortly and I can get back into the swing of things.
There are three new temari in the notebook: #070801 a multipole HHG, #070805 a multipole where the marking is the design, and #070806 a simple wrapped design with a nice floral effect.
I have added three new temari to the notebook. Two of them are multis where the marking is done with colors to complete the design. The other one is a negative space design that uses the orange, green, blue and yellow color combination that I really like right now. You can get to them easily from the 2007 index page.
I have edited the multifacet study extensively, adding new pictures and expanding the information about the formulas and the geometry of the markings. It is more or less in a finished form now although I won't be surprised if I find there are more nuances to add as I get a chance to play with it more and see what others try to do with it. It is still in the same place easily reached form the main math studies page. I have also created a dedicated email account for the temarimath website. If you have comments or questions please feel free to send them to temari@zymurlogic.net. I would love to hear from you.
There is a new math study that I am pretty excited aobut. It is called What is so special about Multi-faceted temari? Although it is not complete yet I decided to post it as a work in progress since the information is really neat and it will be quite awhile before I can write all the details that belong in the study. It includes a new method for creating multipole temari! It comes from a translation from a Japanese book. Check out the study to find out all about it and to link to a new how to page. Also, there are several new temari in the notebook, including one stitched with the new multipole method. Don't be thrown off because it isn't fabulously attractive; it is a first effort at applying color in the marking of the multipole so that the marking becomes the design. Obviously I have a little more work to go there. :-)
There's not too much new this time, just a few new temari in the notebook. #070401 is a wrapped design in the hime style. #070402 is an experiment from Stitch In NY. And #070403 is a book design with somewhat complex interlocked stars.
I have added a new investigation, Stars Part 1. As the name suggests, it is an investigation about a particular type of star motif that you can create with crossed elements. It is called part 1 because I have in mind another investigation for later that will focus on another type of star. I also added the last five temari I made to the notebook. Use the link in the menu at the right to go to the main page to see them. They are all variations of this star technique. Lastly, I added two links to Japanese sites to the links page. These are not really new sites but they are two of my favorites because they give such thorough coverage of a specific style.
I have finally finished the thimble ring investigation. It covers the basic stitches used to do thimble ring designs, the basic structure of the designs and a few examples. It is really only the beginning of what you can create with thimble rings. I have also added a new temari to the notebook #070201. Lastly, I edited an old one (#050402) to add more detail to the diagrams and instructions.
The site has a whole new look! I've been working on the upgrade for some time now. There are now some useful general links across the horizontal menu bar including a site map to allow easy access to all areas of the site. The content navigation menu has moved to the right and now has better indication of where you are in the site.
I have also added my first temari of 2007 to the notebook. It is an all-over design featuring five pointed stars, #070101.
Well, I suppose it is better late than never for site updates. I have 3 new temari added to my notebook: #061001, #061002, and #061101. They are all thimble ring designs. I have enough information now that I should be able to write up the thimble ring investigation including details about how to do the stitch correctly. There are a few other things in the works including a site redesign that should make it a little easier to read pages and a bit easier to navigate (as well as looking nicer in general), but we'll have to see how much my schedule really allows me to get done in the next month.
Once again a slow temari month. I am beginning to explore thimble ring designs so there are two new thimble ring temari in the 2006 notebook (#060901 and #060902). And the 2005 notebook is finally complete. Whoopee!
Well, August was not too productive a month for temari. I only managed to create two new temari. You can get to them from the notebook index page or the 2006 index page. One is a rose garden and the other is based on the mathematical picture known as Sierpinski's gasket. I also updated two more months of the 2005 index. Remember the designs on the year index pages are listed in reverse date order so to see the designs I added to 2005 you will need to scroll down the page to March and April. At this rate I should have the 2005 index completed by the end of this month. Hooray!
We're back! Thanks for your patience. The TemariMath site now has it's own domain which should make it much easier to find. The new address is www.temarimath.info. For those who prefer to go directly to the notebook pages the URL is www.temarimath.info/notebook. Please update your bookmarks if you have them. The RSS feed for site updates has moved as well to www.temarimath.info/whatsnewfeed.xml. You'll need to update the URL in your RSS reader if you use that service. I've added another finished temari (a lovely rose garden variation) to the 2006 notebook and another month to the 2005 index.
Due to technical difficulties I have had to pull the TemariMath site off the server. I will post the new URL for the site as soon as I have relocated it and resolved the issues. I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may cause anyone.
I've added two new temari to the notebook. One is a pretty one using Bunka thread and the other is an experiment with a fuzzy fiber. I've also completed two more months of pages for 2005 so it is now complete back through June. Only 6 more months to go and I will be all caught up!
I have completed the second installment of the Platonic Solids studies: How Can Platonic Solids be Used for Temari Designs?. That pretty much completes the research of Platonic Solids relative to temari. I have several pattern investigations in mind based on the results and I'll be working on them in the coming months.
I have also updated the notebook again. I am working hard at getting the files for the year 2005 added and it is now complete back through August. I have added the files for July 2006. I added a note to the beginning of the main index page about the temari I make and why some of the items in my notebook are not 'pretty' temari.
This is mostly a notebook update. I have finished getting all of the pages for 2006 posted and I am now starting to work backwards through 2005. There are a few navigation changes as well. Most notable is that the index pages for the years are now in reverse order; that is, the most recent temari are at the top of the page. I am hard at work on the second page of the Platonic Solids study and I should be able to post that within the next two weeks.
I've added a new pattern investigation: Investigating Solid and Open Shape Stitching Techniques. There are two new techniques demonstrated based on modifications of the usual manner of stitching these elements. I think there is a lot of potential for experimentation on existing patterns. The investigation has all the details about doing the techniques as well as a number of temari examples.
And, the beginnings of my notebook section are now posted. Eventually this will include all of my notebook data from 2005 forward as I get things converted from the old database I was using. I think the process for putting up the pages is pretty cool so I wrote a small explanation page about it.
I've added an RSS feed to the site also. It will have the brief version of the What's New page. If you have an RSS reader you can subscribe and have easy notification of when the TemariMath site is updated. The URL for the feed is http://puffinstuffny.com/dabolt/temarimath/whatsnewfeed.xml. If you would like more information about RSS try the Yahoo RSS information page. It is focused on the MyYahoo homepage service they offer but it gives good solid information about what RSS is and more or less how it works. If you like the RSS idea but want a different program to read it then do an online search for RSS reader.
Lastly, I need to send my apologies to those of you who use the FireFox browser. Some of the formatting on the site was not thoroughly tested and was broken in Firefox. I have updated those pages and all should be well now. Please let me know if you run into problems in the future. (Send email to temari@zymurlogic.net) It is important to me to have the site be readable for everyone.
I've added the first of two Platonic solids studies. This one is focused on the relationship between the Platonic Solids and the combination temari divisions. There will be pattern investigations to go along with this later. Also, there is now a hidden page on the site. Can you find it?
A whole new look! The TemariMath site has been rewritten using standards compliant XHTML 1.0 and CSS 2.1. For you, the user, that means easier navigation and the site should adjust to view properly regardless of your browser or window size. In addition the site is now copyrighted under a Creative Commons license which will make it much more clear what your rights are regarding the use of the website pages.
In terms of content, there are not many changes right now. I have rewritten the Why Study the Mathematics of Temari? page and I have corrected some grammar and spelling mistakes elsewhere. The Platonic solids study is still underway, but not ready for posting just yet.
